Abstract

Farming and agriculture form the cornerstone of India’s socio-economic structure, with farmers playing a vital role in feeding the nation and sustaining its economy. This research paper examines the symbolic representation of farming, agriculture and food imagery in the relief art of Indian Republic commemorative coinage. Through detailed visual and contextual analysis, it explores how various denominations from 1 rupee to 5 rupees, have historically portrayed agrarian symbols. The study will cover the circulating Indian commemorative republic coinage relief art symbols related to farming, agriculture and food from 1987 to 2007, revealing how this imagery reinforces the value of self-reliance, sustainability, and respect for the farming community. Each symbol encapsulates a story of labor, growth, nourishment, and national progress, making coinage a meaningful canvas that recognizes the essential contributions of Indian farmers. Adopting a qualitative research methodology, the study draws from secondary data including numismatic sources, government mint archives, visual documentation, and scholarly articles. It emphasizes how these small metallic objects transcend their monetary function, serving as instruments of cultural memory and public honor. Ultimately, the research positions commemorative coins not only as economic tools but as vehicles of national identity- embedding the spirit of agriculture into the very fabric of India’s visual and historical narrative.
