- Abstract
The street racing is a wide-spread social issue in the majority of city centers and has been associated with offending among young people, public disorder, and danger. Illegal street racing persisted in Malang City, Indonesia, despite law enforcers consistently ratcheting up efforts to suppress the activity and establishing the Kanjuruhan Street Race (KSR) as a sanctioned alternative. The study herein shall analyze illicit racing not only as deviant action but as a form of resistance to social control by powers that be. Through a qualitative case study method, data collection was accomplished through observation, intensive interviews with six practicing racers, documentation, and literature review. By intersectional examination, the study examines how family background, economic constraints, schooling, peer social networks, and masculinity interact to form racers’ rejection of the KSR. Findings suggest that the event is perceived as too structured, costly, and inaccessible—advantaging competitors with financial capital and sponsorships with schools—and that illicit street racing offers freedom, status, and identity formation. The study concludes by summarizing that illegal racing in Malang needs to be interpreted not just as delinquency but as a complex social reality of resistance and identity construction against authority control.
