Abstract

This study explores the unique challenges faced by family-run businesses in the cultural tourism sector and analysis the adaptive strategies implemented by Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU), a renowned family-owned cultural attraction in Bandung, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research gathered data through in-depth interviews, field observations, and internal documentation. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the data and identify recurring patterns and strategies. The findings reveal that SAU faces internal challenges typical of family businesses—such as leadership succession, balancing professionalism with family values, and maintaining cultural authenticity in a commercial setting. Externally, market shifts, digital transformation, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have pressured the business to adapt. Key adaptive strategies include digitalization of services, generational leadership transition, diversification of cultural offerings, and institutional collaboration. The study highlights the importance of flexible leadership, strategic innovation, and value-based management for the sustainability of family-owned cultural enterprises. It offers practical insights for policymakers, tourism developers, and cultural business managers. This research contributes to the limited body of literature on family business dynamics in cultural tourism contexts, particularly in developing countries. It demonstrates how traditional cultural institutions can innovate while preserving their heritage.
