- Abstract
Official histories often portray the revolutionary period in patriotic and heroic tones. However, the memories of villagers surrounding colonial industries hold a different tone. This article aims to explore how villagers associated with colonial industries remember the period of revolution and nationalization. To examine this, this research uses historical methods with a case study in Ketindan Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency. This research answers several questions: how do they preserve their history through sites of memory; what kinds of memories are triggered by these sites; and to what extent do these memories challenge the national version of history? This article describes alternative ways of remembering the revolutionary period in Indonesia. Ultimately, this overview suggests that a single historical narrative is no longer appropriate for contemporary society.
