Abstract

Urban resilience in tourism cities requires not only technological advancements but also cultural rootedness to ensure sustainability and identity preservation. This study explores the integration of local wisdom into urban spatial planning, inspired by Yogyakarta’s Philosophical Axis, as a model for strengthening urban resilience in Malang within the smart tourism and digital ecosystem context. The research aims to understand how symbolic spatial narratives can shape resilient and culturally grounded urban development. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through indepth interviews, participant observation, and field notes involving cultural experts, local residents, and urban planners in Malang. Thematic analysis was conducted following Moustakas’ phenomenological method to extract the lived experiences and meanings ascribed to urban space. Findings reveal that the symbolic values of the Yogyakarta Axis such as harmony, balance, and cosmological alignment are perceived as adaptable principles for spatial identity building in Malang. Participants emphasized the importance of spiritual and cultural continuity in urban design, especially in the face of modernization and tourism growth. The study demonstrates that phenomenological insights into cultural memory and spatial perception can guide inclusive and sustainable city planning. The integration of local wisdom into smart tourism strategies not only enhances resilience but also enriches visitor experience through deeper place attachment and identity resonance.
