Abstract

The waste management system in Malang City has not been optimally realised. However, the volume of waste continues to increase, especially Used Beverage Carton (UBC) waste from cafe activities in Malang City. This research aims to explore the implementation of the community-based solid waste management concept implemented by iLitterless Indonesia as an effort to encourage a circular economy in Malang City. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with data collection in the form of observation, interview, and documentation. The results showed that iLitterless’ community-based solid waste management is packaged through various programmes and services to support the waste sorting movement from the source. One of iLitterless programmes that carries the concept of community-based solid waste management based on circular economy, namely the Integrated Circular Waste Management System (iCOS), has an impact on cafes in Malang City. The iCOS program provides impacts including waste management efficiency, plastic waste reduction, increased eco awareness, and green industry branding for partner cafes. Segregated waste is recycled by involving various recycling actors. In addition, the recycling produces valuable products as an effort to encourage a circular economy in Malang City. Valuable recycled products include coasters, bar chairs, plaques, etc. These products are processed from the waste deposited by café partners. Then, the recycled products will be given to the café and traded to the public. But currently, iLitterless is still in the trial phase and has not yet been traded.
