- Abstract
The phenomenon of populism in contemporary politics has flourished within democracy because of a crisis of representation in state political institutions. As a strategy of power, populism is anchored in the personalization of authority, giving rise to patronage and even the cult of personality. Rather than strengthening democracy, populism produces side effects that gradually weaken representative democracy itself. In Indonesia, the intensification of power personalization is manifested in Jokowi’s populist practices during his ten years presidency. As previously noted regarding the consequences borne by democracy, this study examines the personalization of power in Jokowi’s populism and its impact on Indonesian democracy. The analysis is grounded in the thought of contemporary populism scholar and political philosopher Nadia Urbinati.
