Abstract

Patriarchal culture marginalizes women in politics, economics, and family life, causing many women to feel gender inequality. The roles of men and women based on households are determined by tradition. However, the workload in this division of roles tends to be skewed towards the domestic sphere, which can be said to have a heavier workload and cannot be abandoned. This study aims to determine how husband-wife relationships are affected by the division of domestic tasks between husbands and wives in the patriarchal culture of Madurese society in rural and urban areas in the context of a changing society. This study used qualitative method with combination of analytical approaches from previous literature studies and in-depth interviews, then collected using the theory of power relations proposed by Michel Foucault and described descriptively, so that it can convey information comprehensively. This study was conducted in Bangkalan Sampang Regency with consideration to explore more deeply the patriarchal culture of the Madurese society. The results of this study indicate that the power relations between husbands and wives in the patriarchal culture of the Madurese society are greatly influenced by cultural discourse, religion, and social practices that symbolize male superiority. Differences were found between wives living in rural and urban areas in terms of extended family support. However, patriarchal cultural practices were found to be similar in both areas. Patriarchal cultural practices in both areas are linked by patriarchal cultural discourse that is widely accepted by society and socialized across generations.
