Abstract

Reyog Ponorogo is one of the most famous cultural identities in East Java. This art is included in the traditional arts with the main character Singo Barong, which is considered a symbol of strength and majesty. On the other hand, with the passage of time, the discourse of Islamization began to affect all aspects of community culture, including traditional arts, and one of them is the art of reyog Ponorogo. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of Islamization discourse on the symbolization of Singo Barong in Reyog Ponorogo art by examining symbolic changes and meanings that occur due to the interaction of Islamization discourse and local culture. This research uses a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach. The main theory used in this research is discourse theory by Michel Foucault, and the supporting theory is semiotic theory by Umberto Eco. The results of this study are that there are several influences from the discourse of Islamization on the symbolization of the SingoBarong character in the reyog Ponorogo art, including the teaching to always dhikr or remember Allah SWT, which is symbolized by tasbih in the form of bracelet beads on the beak of a peacock, as well as a change in shape that was previously similar to the temple stupa with Hindu-buddhist patterns to a shape similar to the mosque dome.
