- Abstract
The ancient Javanese agrarian system, the king was the ruler of all land both from the aspect of public and private law. The inhabitants have no other rights to their cultivated land except the owner of the rice field profit share and (with compulsory labor redemption) the manager of the right to use the land in his yard; According to this view, the small people only have contractual rights to cultivated land and very weak rights in yard land. The method used in this study is the historical method, including source tracing, internal and external criticism, interpretation and historiography. The data sources used were colonial archives, contemporary newspapers and rijksblad. The government strengthens both rights to provide a more decent place for the population in social life, through agrarian reorganization. The main goal of the reorganization was to overhaul the structure concerning the pattern of financial regulation, the internal social household, the taxation system, the regulation of agrarian issues, the personal legal status of the indigenous population as much as possible in accordance with the principles to be applied by the Western rulers. The reorganization also provided the reason for a fundamental change in the financial relationship between the king and the government. Agrarian reorganization intends to revive communal institutions, because the government views these village institutions as the main condition for the progress of the peasant population. Meanwhile as a result of the agrarian reorganization, the nobles of Sultanate felt financial difficulties. They earned a very small salary, but they also lost what became a social authority: the control over the land (however small) and over the population living there, It can generally be said that the agrarian reorganization weakened the position of the nobility in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.
