Abstract

This paper explores the cognitive processes behind reader immersion using Singer and Cole’s novel Ghost Fleet. This study has 61 undergraduate students to analyze and discuss their deep engagement and transportation in reading (qualitative research) This study explores the complexity of immersion and how readers engage with the story through a comprehensive framework drawing on cognitive poetics. This qualitative methodology involved in-depth surveys and interviews with readers, leading to a deep understanding of their transmedia experiences. The results suggest that Ghost Fleet readers engage with the novel through a variety of cognitive and emotional pathways. These mechanisms range from mental simulation and narrative transportation to emotional empathy and situational grounding. Readers also described being trans medially transported by their connection to the novel, which spilled over into movies, games, and even online discussions. Overall, the study shows that reader immersion is a nuanced and multidimensional construct mediated by an interplay of cognitive processes as well as exposure to external media. Such findings help to inform the broader question of how fiction creates a powerful sense of immersion, thickening its thread as paper into an intricately woven tapestry.
