Abstract

Civic education is essential in shaping students’ social responsibility, democratic values, and cultural identity. However, conventional teaching methods often fail to foster active student engagement or establish meaningful connections with real-world civic issues. This study investigates the integration of CoSpaces Edu, an immersive learning platform incorporating augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), to enhance civic education through local wisdom and interactive simulations. Employing a systematic literature review (SLR) based on the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) framework alongside a quasi-experimental approach, this research assesses the effectiveness of AR/VR in improving student engagement, conceptual understanding, and civic competence. The findings indicate that immersive learning environments significantly enhance motivation, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation while bridging the gap between traditional and digital pedagogies. Despite these advantages, challenges such as technological accessibility, teacher preparedness, and curriculum adaptation remain barriers to widespread adoption. This study underscores the necessity of targeted policy interventions, teacher training programs, and infrastructure development to ensure equitable access to immersive learning tools. Future research should explore scalable AR/VR learning models, longitudinal analyses of student engagement, and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in personalizing civic education experiences. The integration of immersive technologies in civic education presents a transformative opportunity to cultivate active, informed, and culturally aware citizens in an increasingly digitalized world.
