Abstract

Trend in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language currently has been substantially influenced by the transitional period, when teachers were requested to do their best efforts to adapt to the transitional learning situation. In 2023 the Ministry of Education and Culture launched a policy of freedom to learn, which was inspired by the need to cope with the learning loss as the results of previous emergency curriculum. This research is an attempt to describe the trend of the teaching and learning English in senior high schools in Bali at present, which comprises the methods and strategies employed by the English teachers in promoting learners’ independent learning. The results are discussed with reference to the previous teaching and learning trend. The study was conducted in 4 schools, each of which represents different regencies in Bali, Indonesia. The research instruments include document analysis, interview, and classroom observation. The findings reveal that the trend in English Language Teaching at present is the improved version of the transitional period in which the teachers are concerned about teaching innovation through the utilization of technology and student-centered learning activities.
