- Abstract
This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing the case method and its modifications on student learning outcomes in Biochemistry courses at the Biology Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Medan. In the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, the skills known as “The 4Cs”—critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration—are essential. With the Merdeka Belajar policy and the seventh Main Performance Indicator (IKU), Universitas Negeri Medan integrates the case method into the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) curriculum. This study employs a mixed descriptive method with purposive sampling of 100 students, involving pre-test and post-test assessments as well as observations and semi-structured interviews. The results show a significant increase in the understanding of the structure, function, and metabolism of carbohydrates, with an average N-Gain score of 0.78 and an effectiveness percentage of 77.74%. The modified case method, which incorporates varied learning models and syntax, demonstrates increased active participation and student learning outcomes. These findings support the effectiveness of the case method and the Merdeka Belajar principles in preparing competent graduates to face the challenges of Industry 4.0.
