Abstract

The Challenges of the 21st century have led to pressures that trigger an increase in suicide cases among students due to their tendency to criticize themselves through negative self-talk. This study focuses on the influence of positive self-talk on student self-criticism. The approach used is quantitative with a correlational design. The study sample consisted of 420 students from several universities in Indonesia, selected using convenience random sampling techniques. The study instrument utilized a self-talk scale developed based on Brinthaupt’s theory with 31 items (reliability .889) and a self-criticism scale adapted from Gilbert’s Self-Criticizing/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale with 21 items (reliability .918) [1–2]. Data analysis employed simple linear regression, indicating that positive self-talk harms self-criticism with a contribution of 39.6% (R = .629; R2 = .396; p = .000; p < .001). This means that the more positive self-talk emerges, the lower the self-criticism tends to be. In light of these findings, counselors in higher education must pay attention to students’ levels of self-criticism and encourage the use of positive self-talk as an effort to reduce self-criticism.
