Abstract

This research paper delves into the innovative application of Project-Based Learning (PBL) within TESOL teaching models, aiming to enhance language acquisition and prepare students for the complexities of global communication. PBL shifts the traditional teacher-centered approach to a student-driven, collaborative learning environment where students engage with real-world problems and tasks that require them to use English in practical and meaningful ways. This method not only bolsters language proficiency but also develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, which are essential for success in the 21st-century workforce. The paper underscores the advantages of PBL in TESOL, such as promoting authentic language use, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and enhancing collaboration and autonomy among students. It also addresses the challenges associated with PBL implementation, including the need for extensive preparation, time management, and assessment complexities. Strategies to overcome these challenges are discussed, such as differentiated instruction, clear assessment criteria, and resourceful project design. The research findings suggest that while PBL presents several challenges, they are not insurmountable. With careful planning, collaboration among educators, and a commitment to ongoing professional development, these obstacles can be effectively addressed. The paper concludes that PBL has the potential to significantly transform TESOL teaching, making it more relevant, engaging, and effective for today’s diverse learners. By embracing PBL, educators can provide students with a rich and dynamic learning experience that goes beyond language acquisition to foster the development of well-rounded, globally competent individuals.
