Abstract

Numeracy is an essential educational foundation to develop students’ understanding of mathematics, logic, life skills, and future readiness. This research will examine the condition of students’ numeracy skills in elementary school. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The sample was selected based on purposive sampling, namely 128 students in grade 4 elementary schools in Bandung-Indonesia. The instrument used is a student numeracy test based on the minimum competency assessment (MCA) from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions with material on numbers and algebra (10 questions), geometry and measurement (10 questions), and data and uncertainty (10 questions). The results of students’ numeracy are divided into 4 categories: proficient, competent, basic, and needs intervention. The results showed that the average numeracy score of students in grade 4 was 44.04 (basic). 80% of students (N = 103) are still at the knowing level. 19% of students (N = 24) are at the applying level. 1% (N = 1) are at the reasoning level. Then, 1% of students (N = 1) were in the proficient category, 19% of students (N = 24) were in the competent category, 38% of students (N = 49) were in the basic category, and 42% of students (N = 54) were in the category of needs intervention. These results show that special attention is needed to improve students’ numeracy skills. This research can contribute to education by evaluating numeracy skills to determine policy and develop appropriate interventions in elementary school students. The study had a limited sample, and larger samples are recommended for future research to see a detailed picture of students’ numeracy skills, especially in elementary school.
