Abstract

This study aims to examine the reliability and validity of the Youth School Adaptability Scale among freshmen in boarding high schools in Jiangsu Province, China. As the transition to high school, particularly in a boarding environment, presents numerous psychological and social challenges for adolescents, there is a growing need for effective tools to assess students’ school adaptation. Drawing on established instruments such as the High School Students’ School Adaptation Scale and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire, this study developed a comprehensive 82-item scale encompassing seven key dimensions: student–teacher intimacy, student–teacher conflict, school attitude, loneliness, group adaptation, peer relationships, and learning study adaptation. A total of 375 students participated in the survey. Data analysis included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, as well as internal consistency testing. Results demonstrated excellent sampling adequacy and a stable seven-factor structure, with all dimensions showing strong internal reliability. The confirmatory factor analysis further supported the structural validity of the scale, with most fit indices meeting or exceeding recommended thresholds. These findings suggest that the Youth School Adaptability Scale is a psychometrically sound instrument suitable for use in assessing the school adjustment of boarding high school students.
