Abstract

This research aims to collect initial data for the creation of critical thinking instrument that incorporate real-time feedback on performance assessments in scientific practicums at two state universities and two private universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed descriptively through a chi-square test, employing a qualitative case study methodology alongside cluster random sampling techniques. Data was collected through the utilization of questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and observations. The research sample comprised 376 university students and lecturers, alongside comprehensive interviews conducted with 4 associate deans, 4 program directors, 4 laboratory directors, and 4 teaching assistants from four distinct universities. The findings indicate that there was an absence of an evaluation regarding performance critical thinking due to the lack of an appropriate instrument. The assessment results indicate public and private universities do not differ significantly (p > 0.05) regarding the measurement of critical thinking incorporates immediate feedback. It appears that neither of the categories of institution has implemented critical thinking performance assessments that incorporate real-time feedback within the context of science practicum. Lecturers’ and students’ responses to the implementation of critical thinking performance assessments, which are incorporated with immediate feedback during the science practicum, there was no notable difference (p > 0.05). This suggests that university students share a similar experience with lecturers in evaluating critical thinking performance with feedback in the context of science practicum. This research proposes the development of assessment tools for critical thinking performance that offer immediate feedback during science practicum activities.
