Abstract

This research explores the integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) - based digital applications in teaching basic concepts in Algebra at a State University in the Philippines. The study aimed to design a module-based STEAM education program designed to enhance students’ conceptual understanding and engagement through the use of innovative digital tools. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups of first-year university students enrolled in introductory Algebra course. The experimental group was exposed to a STEAM-based module incorporating digital apps like GeoGebra, Desmos, and Matplotlib, while the control group received traditional instruction. Pre- and post-tests, along with student feedback surveys, were used to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. Results indicate that the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in their understanding of mathematical concepts, particularly in areas requiring spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills, compared to the control group. Moreover, students in the experimental group reported higher levels of engagement and interest in the subject matter, attributing their positive experience to the interactive and creative nature of the digital apps. The findings suggest that integrating STEAM-based digital applications into Algebra can be an effective strategy for improving student learning outcomes and engagement in a state university setting. This study serves as a foundation for the development of a comprehensive module-based STEAM education program that could be scaled and adapted for broader use in higher education institutions across the Philippines.
