Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between student’s grit and academic performance in Mathematics. To carry out this research study, a descriptive-correlational research design was employed. A total of 68 Grade 10 students at San Isidro High School-Kadingilan, Inc. Kadingilan, Bukidnon, Philippines in the school year 2023-2024 were selected as respondents using simple random sampling. The researchers used an adapted 5-point Likert scale survey questionnaire and the previous quarter grade of the students to gather the data needed for the study. To determine the relationship of the two variables Spearman rank correlation was utilized. The results showed that the level of grit among the Grade 10 students at San Isidro High School-Kadingilan, Inc. is moderately gritty while their level of performance in Mathematics is very satisfactory. The correlation analysis also revealed that students’ grit was not significantly correlated to their academic performance in Mathematics. These findings indicate that the level of grit among students does not necessarily translate to the level of academic performance they had in Mathematics. Student demographics such as age and educational attainment are some of the possible factors that may influence these results. Despite of that, this study suggests that it is still crucial that teachers will provide students with the necessary support to excel in the subject by incorporating grit-building activities to cultivate students’ resilience, perseverance, and a positive attitude towards challenges in learning Mathematics. Also, it recommends further longitudinal study with larger samples that will examine the relationship between grit and academic performance over time.
