- Abstract
Chinese language education is conducted in over 180 countries and regions. However, studies investigating the neuroplasticity of Chinese as a second language remain relatively scarce. This review examines the impact of language-related factors on neuroplasticity during Chinese second language acquisition. We conclude that language-related factors such as onset age of acquisition, level of proficiency, and exposure modulate the neuroplasticity during Chinese learning, much like in other languages. Additionally, this review offers directions for future research in Chinese acquisition: (1) employing longitudinal designs to track the dynamic changes of participants from low to high proficiency levels; (2) combining multivariate analyses with longitudinal designs to track the dynamic changes in neural representations during Chinese learning; (3) focusing on Chinese tonal learning as a key area for future studies and considering the impact of the complexity of pitch systems. This review provides a comprehensive overview of how language-related factors influence neuroplastic changes in Chinese acquisition and offers a theoretical foundation for the development of methods in international Chinese language education.
