- Abstract
This study aims to explain the potential of integrating discourse about memory studies in history learning. In this case, the memory studies, especially a collective memory that will be brought into the classroom is regarding the Tumpak Rinjing Battle in Pacitan Regency. As it widely acknowledged, the Tumpak Rinjing battle, an affair behind the construction of Palagan Tumpak Rinjing monument, is often misremembered by the people because the monument was built with the big statue of Sudirman and Slamet Riyadi. It also leads to omission of the commoner’s role in that 1949’s battle. This study uses a conceptual research method to explore the history of Tumpak Rinjing Battle, construction of the monument, a collective misremembering, all of them in the frame of memory studies and oral history. It will also explore its potential to be brought in history learning to counter and deconstruct a collective misremembering. As the result, we see that this effort to align the misremembering is an important move to carry on a critical history learning, so the students would not only learn about an affair in the past, but also understand that something in the past could be manipulated according to who held the power.
