Abstract

Tuak is a traditional beverage widely found across various regions of Indonesia. It is produced through the fermentation of a base lliqui typically sap derived from coconut, sugar palm (aren or enau), or lontar palms. As an alcoholic beverage resulting from fermentation, tuak is often subject to the same negative stigma associated with other alcoholic drinks. However, in certain parts of Indonesia particularly Bali tuak proves to be more than just a traditional alcoholic beverage. This study does not aim to document the history of tuak; rather, it delves into the stories, identities, and ethical values embodied by the drink elements that stand in stark contrast to the common negative stigma attached to alcohol. Interviews conducted with members of the tuak drinking community at Sekaa Demen (Banjar Munggu, Mengwi Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency, Bali) reveal that the tradition of metuakan (tuak drinking) preserves collective memories and identities. These are transmitted through stories and practices deeply rooted in the Tri Hita Karana philosophy a way of life that upholds values and ethics regarding the maintenance of harmony and balance among humans (pawongan), between humans and nature (palemahan), and between humans and the Sang Hyang (parhyangan).
