Abstract

This paper examines the community’s response to adaptation and resistance to the ongoing marginalization process. Islamic and Arab culture have been present in Banyuwangi since the 18th century, contributing to the Osing Tribe’s religious landscape. In addition, there is a transformation of Islamic political identity that indicates a dynamic interaction between culture, identity, and religion. This study used ethnohistory with a qualitative approach. Data was collected by observation, interviews, and documentation. This research found that the community has adapted to the government’s policy to embrace Islam. However, customs are still preserved. Social, cultural and political dynamics show the adaptation and resistance of the Osing Tribe. In the face of modernization and the dominance of official religions, the Osing Tribe shows adaptability. They still maintain religious rituals and practices, such as slametan, ruwatan, kebo-keboan, tumpeng sewu, mepe kasur, othek, sending lontar yusuf, and pilgrimage to buyut cili grave. On the other hand, the Osing tribe also shows resistance to the influence of dominant religions and modernization that are considered to threaten their identity and traditional values. Their efforts include trusting shamans, strengthening traditional institutions, and establishing Kemiren Traditional Village. This research provides a perspective on the adaptation and resistance of the Osing Tribe in maintaining spiritual traditions in the midst of on-going socio-cultural transformation.
