- Abstract
The historical remains of Padusan Village in East Java represent a multilayered cultural landscape shaped by centuries of religious and sociopolitical transformation. Despite its significance, neglect persists due to limited studies, weak documentation, and the absence of formal protection, leaving communities without adequate foundations for preservation. To address this, the study applies archaeological-historical methods structured in five stages: data collection, data processing, analytical classification, cultural-historical reconstruction, and dissemination. Field surveys, oral traditions, satellite imagery, and immersive 360-degree documentation were used to capture both tangible and intangible heritage. Findings reveal layers ranging from the terraced ritual platform (punden berundak) symbolizing early sacred traditions and Kolam Gambiran associated with Hindu-Buddhist purification rites, to the Ardhanārīśvara statue reflecting Southeast Asian iconography, the Ratu Melati Tomb actively venerated in the Islamic era, and colonial zones remembered through oral and archival records. The close proximity of these sites demonstrates continuity of spatial use for religious and communal purposes rather than fragmentation. Socio-economic studies further emphasize that accurate documentation and responsible interpretation can support heritage-based tourism and strengthen local livelihoods. Nevertheless, serious challenges remain due to limited awareness and protection. Within this context, the data acquired form a substantial foundation for shaping concrete preservation policies and guiding sustainable heritage development strategies. The study underscores the urgent necessity of systematic documentation and integrated management to safeguard Padusan’s multilayered cultural legacy amid modern pressures. More than a preliminary contribution, this research offers actionable frameworks and policy-relevant insights that can directly inform applied heritage management and support evidence-based decision-making at both local and regional levels.
