Abstract

This comparative study focuses on comparing the Aridharma storyline on the reliefs of Jago Temple with the Aridharma or Angling Darma manuscript that developed in the Javanese community. The relief and the manuscript are important representations of Hindu-Buddhist literature and visual arts in East Java in the 13th century. Through archaeological research procedures with a semiotic approach, this study identifies similarities and differences in the narrative structure, characters, and scene sequences presented in the two media. The results of the comparison show that the Ari-dharma relief sculptures in Jago Temple have been adapted to visual and spatial needs, while the Aridharma manuscript presents a more complete and chronologically structured story. This finding shows that differences in the medium of storytelling affect the form and organization of the narrative, while reflecting cultural adaptation in conveying moral and religious values. At the same time, it also emphasizes that local wisdom in the form of variations of temple reliefs has been developing for a long time in Nusantara. The Aridharma relief presents a condensation of moral and spiritual messages adapted from texts, with the relief serving as a visual communication medium for the broader community through the temple as a symbol of religion.
