- Abstract
This study investigates the spatial and cultural implications of integrating Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAVs) into Suzhou’s old town, with a focus on user perceptions and adaptive mechanisms. Through in depth semi-structured interviews with ten residents and affinity diagram analysis, the research identifies 16 key perception indicators across four dimensions: residential space, transport infrastructure, urban environment, and cultural-recreational space. Findings reveal that SAVs not only improve accessibility and efficiency but also restructure spatial usage and challenge the continuity of traditional urban forms. The study highlights the tension between technological optimization and the preservation of place based social memory. It concludes that planning for SAVs integration in historic urban areas must balance technological efficiency with cultural and spatial continuity. This exploratory study lays the foundation for future research incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives and advanced methods such as generative AI, behavioral experiments, and immersive simulations to better understand the long-term impacts of autonomous mobility on traditional urban fabrics.
