Abstract

Traditional drama is a treasure of Chinese folk art and it plays an important role in the world's drama. This study aims to analyze the spatial-temporal evolution patterns of 138 national-level traditional drama heritages in the Yellow (Huanghe) River Basin. Quantitative geographic analysis methods and GIS analysis methods are employed to systematically analyze the data. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore the fundamental factors that impact the distribution of these heritages utilizing ArcGIS Pro 3.0 software. It is shown that: (1) The spatial distribution of traditional drama in the Yellow (Huanghe) River Basin shows the characteristics of clustering but uneven distribution. The spatial distribution pattern of traditional dramas in the basin exhibits a gradual decrease in density from North China, East China, and Central China to Northwest China. (2) The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics show that the number and core of traditional dramas formed in the Yellow (Huanghe) River Basin changed significantly at various stages. The number of traditional dramas formed during the heyday of traditional dramas (Qing Dynasty and Republican Period) is the largest. The overall center of gravity has a general tendency to migrate from west to east. (3) The spatial distribution of traditional dramas in the Yellow River Basin is substantially influenced by both natural factors, including topography, climate, and hydrology, and human factors, such as transportation, economy, population density, traditional villages, and historical reasons.
