- Abstract
This article examines the causes of the formation and escalation of the transport crisis in the Russian Empire during World War I, focusing on the procurement of foreign vehicles for both civilian and military institutions. At the outbreak of the war, Russia lacked a domestic automotive industry. Moreover, the country was heavily dependent on economic partnerships with Germany, against which it went to war in 1914. Additionally, there was no established system for selecting and ordering the necessary equipment from abroad. Against this backdrop, the text provides specific accounts of attempts to utilize automobiles to address the needs of the Russian transport system, as well as the challenges it faced. This topic allows for broader conclusions regarding the extent to which automobiles could have helped Russia overcome its transport crisis, why these efforts ultimately failed, and how these failures are connected to the onset of the revolution.
