Abstract

This paper explores the role of humanizing technology in palliative care through the lens of emotional affordances, with a specific focus on its alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By integrating case studies of elderly patients in palliative care, the paper develops a conceptual framework that emphasizes the design of empathetic, personalized technologies to address critical emotional needs. These case studies highlight three major areas: reducing isolation and loneliness, fostering meaningful conversations, and empowering decision-making. The first case study addresses the emotional burden of isolation by demonstrating the use of telecommunication platforms and virtual support networks. The second explores how digital tools can facilitate emotionally significant conversations between patients, families, and healthcare providers. The third focuses on empowering elderly patients to make informed decisions about their care through user-friendly interfaces and advanced care planning tools. This framework underscores the importance of designing healthcare technologies that prioritize empathy, autonomy, and dignity, aligning with SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By promoting equitable access to compassionate, technologically enabled palliative care, this paper calls for an agenda that bridges the gap between emotional well-being, healthcare technology, and sustainable development.
