- Abstract
The study presented here validates the typical phytochemical methods for the analysis of bioactive complexes in Cerbera odollam, which is commonly known for its suicidal properties (suicide tree) qualitatively. This species of plants is of great use in Forensic Science for its toxicological significance. This plant contains an effective amount of cardiac glycosides, hence Cerbera odollam is oftenly concerned with deadly cases of poisoning across humid regions in India. The work presented here validates phytochemical analyses which includes Salkowski’s, Dragendroff’s and Keller-Killiani’s test for the examination of tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycoside, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, amino acids and saponins in various parts of the plants like fruit pulp, petiole, leaf and seed). The conclusions of this study confirmed that the cardiac glycoside, especially in kernel and seed is present along with its secondary metabolites present in the various other tissues of the plant. Each analysis confirmed specificity, analytical reliability and reproducibility under precise conditions. These tests will result in the supporting the forensic applicability of the phytochemical analysis in the toxicological analysis which involves Cerbera odollam.
