- Abstract
Language and identity studies often overlook the factor of researcher identity. In this paper I consider the multiple identities of the researcher and how this relates to their fieldwork, especially in terms of their field-language competence. After providing an overview of current thought concerning language learning and identity research and how this relates to researcher identity, I examine some emerging themes concerning researcher identity from my own research journey, including preconceived notions of the role of a researcher held by the community, researcher as language learner, researcher as insider, and researcher as collaborator. Greater transparency amongst linguistic researchers about the impact of their identities on their research will lead to more robust and credible scientific progress.
