Abstract

The labeling of Chinese Indonesians as “Chinese” has created a distance between Chinese Indonesians and indigenous people. The labeling of “Chinese” perpetuates the impression that Chinese Indonesians are merely immigrants from China who are different from indigenous people. This study aims to describe the fragmentation of the identity of Chinese Indonesian women in the novel Putri Cina by Sindhunata. The 2 Chinese women analyzed in this novel are based on different era settings, namely “Putri Cina” from the Majapahit era and Giok Tien in the New Order era. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection was carried out through literature studies, while the analysis method used identity theory and feminist theory by looking at phenomena related to identity fragmentation. The results of the study show that Sindhunata, in the novel Putri Cina, narrates the symptoms of identity fragmentation experienced by Chinese Indonesian women. The two Chinese female characters in this novel live in a dual identity, divided and overshadowed by fear. Violence and racial prejudice against ethnic Chinese originated from the colonial political system and cultural assimilation policies during the New Order era. The form of identity fragmentation that appears in this novel is the emergence of anxiety and alienation of women towards their social environment.
