Abstract

The dynamics of religious life in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), have grown and developed through a very long process. Since the beginning of the reform era, the phenomenon of the survival of the Muslim minority has been interesting to portray as a wealth of religious life in Indonesia. The research problem is how the dynamics of the religious life of the Muslim minority in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, which includes a portrait of the dynamics of life, why it can survive and develop well, and what are the supporting and inhibiting factors. The results of the study show that the dynamics of the religious life of the Muslim minority in Kupang City, internally, have developed quite well, with no significant upheavals, no differences in understanding or khilafiyah. Externally, there is tension and pressure from the outside that arises when local or national political issues and methods of preaching are involved. The Muslim minority can survive and develop because of the strategies they employ, namely adaptation, integration, institutionalization, social capital, values, development, and solidarity strategies. To achieve this, there are inhibiting factors from within and from outside. Internal inhibiting factors include suspicion, lack of familiarity, decreasing appreciation for one’s own culture, narrow fanaticism of religious communities, and social jealousy. External inhibiting factors are related to negative political issues, engineered culture that provokes at the national level, infiltration that disrupts the flow of information, and proselytism. Meanwhile, supporting factors include local wisdom, great respect for their culture, a high level of tolerance, the culture of mutual assistance likened to the proverb “one stove, three stones,” serving food, mutual cooperation, mutual respect, social awareness, and collective commitment of the community and the government.
