Abstract

Reading is a fundamental and crucial language skill for every individual. However, many EFL teacher candidates face challenges in comprehending the texts they read. This study aims to assess the efficiency of an AI-integrated hybrid model in improving the reading comprehension of Indonesian EFL teacher candidates. The study builds an interactive and adaptable learning environment by integrating AI technologies into a hybrid learning model. A quasi-experimental method involved 50 EFL teacher candidates at a public university in North Maluku, Indonesia. The samples were divided into two groups: a control group receiving conventional instruction and an experimental group using the AI-based hybrid model. The instrument used was a validated reading comprehension test. The results point out that Indonesian EFL teacher candidates employing the AI-integrated hybrid model experienced a significant improvement in reading comprehension compared to the control group. Data analysis operating an independent t-test showed a significant difference between the two groups with a p-value smaller than the significance level (0.001 < 0.05). The AI-integrated hybrid model can be an innovative educational solution that enriches teaching methods.
