Abstract

Palembang is one of the ancient cities in Indonesia, even Southeast Asia. Based on inscriptions from the Srivijaya Kingdom period, Palembang has played an important role in the political, social and cultural dynamics from the VII century to the XIX century. During the Sriwijaya Kingdom, Palembang was once the center of the capital, before moving to Jambi in the 10th century and Kedah in the 11th century. From Chinese and Portuguese news sources, it is known that Sriwijaya collapsed due to the attack of the Majapahit Kingdom in the XIV century. During this era, the Srivijaya Kingdom became the leading center of Buddhist education in Asia, apart from Nalanda in India. After the era of the Srivijaya Kingdom and under the rule of Majapahit. However, since Majapahit experienced civil war and the center of government was centered in Demak, then Palembang also became the territory of Demak. At this time Islam began to develop in Palembang. Buddhist and Islamic archaeological remains found in Palembang can be grouped into two categories, namely: sacred -or sacralized- and profane buildings. The first category includes the remains of temples, statues, mosques and tombs. The second category is in the form of palace buildings, palace walls, public buildings, settlements, and others. The existence of these archaeological remains reflects the similarity of the layout of city components from the Srivijaya Kingdom and the Palembang Sultanate. Using an archaeo-historical approach, this paper will discuss the influence of Hindu-Buddhism on city planning during the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate (1662-1825). This study intends to analyze the pattern or placement of archaeological remains from the Sriwijaya Kingdom and Palembang Sultanate periods to be reconstructed historically so that it can be known whether or not there was a Hindu-Buddhist influence on city planning during the Palembang Sultanate period. Based on the placement and distribution pattern of city components during the Sriwijaya Kingdom and Palembang Sultanate, it is known that there was a Hindu Buddhist influence on the city planning pattern during the Palembang Sultanate.
