Abstract

Tolakinese folktales reveal the community’s views on women’s roles and regional motherhood values. Three chosen tales were deconstructed into mythemes, revealing the community’s expectations of maternity and women’s unique social status. Each narrative emphasizes different aspects of parenting, such as moral rectitude, tenacity, and the protective role of women in families and society. The findings reveal the community’s understanding and expectations of motherhood, highlighting themes such as special position for women in the society, in context of community survival in the future. Each story highlights different aspects of motherhood, emphasizing resilience, moral integrity, and the nurturing role of women within their families and society. These narratives function as educational and preservational tools, transmitting essential cultural values and norms across generations, particularly within non-literate contexts. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of motherhood in Tolaki society and underscores the significance of oral literature in maintaining and disseminating indigenous knowledge.
