Abstract

In this research, the use and revitalization of the Laz language, one of the local languages under threat of being lost in Türkiye, were investigated and predictions about the future are made. This research was completed with the qualitative research pattern and the case study model. Data in the research were collected with the semi-structured interview technique. Analysis of data was completed with the content analysis method. The study group for the research comprised 16 participants participating in a Laz Teaching course. In the research, it was found that young adults did not choose to use Laz as their spoken language, and that Laz is a language under threat due to its conversion to a language spoken within the family only by a certain group in the local area. Participants thought it important to learn and sustain their native language and culture and were identified to have high desire and motivation related to this topic. In conclusion, while fully accepting the native language appears to allow transfers of history and culture, creation of a public and political environment where speaking the native language is seen to be a cultural asset may provide positive contributions to the process of revitalizing and sustaining the language.
