Abstract

Social studies course involves integrating the content taken from social sciences in accordance with the level of the students to improve their citizenship knowledge, skills and values (correct decision-making). This course, which assists students become virtuous individuals and better citizens, has an important place in the curriculum as a discipline that primarily deals with the political, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of societies in the context of past, pre- sent and future. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to obtain the opinions of prospective teachers about the relationship between reflective questioning and social studies. To obtain in-depth information about the concept of reflective questioning of social studies teacher candidates, a descriptive scanning method suitable for qualitative research approach was used in this study. The study group consisted of 30 students studying in the 4th grade of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, Faculty of Education, Department of Social Studies Teaching, and a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher in line with expert opinions was applied. Pre-service teachers emphasized the importance of reflective questioning by considering student interpretations and critical thinking. After this research, recommendations can be stated as follows. There is no experimental research on reflective questioning in social studies teaching. Experimental research can be conducted. Opinions of secondary school students and social studies teachers can be obtained regarding reflective questioning. Students can be encouraged to teach through reflective questioning.
