- Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the relation between the statistical literacy skills of pre-service mathematics teachers and their attitudes towards statistics. In the study, the relation between pre-service teachers’ statistical literacy levels and their gender, grade level, the courses they have taken was also examined. Besides the correlation between pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards statistics and their gender, grade level, courses they have taken was examined. The study group of the research consist of 138 pre-service math teachers studying at a state university in Turkey. The study was designed quantitatively. Data in the study were collected through the ‘Statistical Literacy Scale’ and ‘Attitude Towards Statistics Scale’ of which validity and reliability studies have been completed. Criterion sampling method which is one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used in the study. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by using SPSS 28 Software. Normality of the distribution was examined. Independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and correlation tests were used. As a result of the study, it was found that there was a weak positive correlation between statistical literacy and attitude towards statistics. Other results of the study are as follows: When the statistical literacy levels of pre-service teachers were analysed according to the courses they have taken related to statistics, it was found that there is a significant difference between pre-service teachers taking all the courses and taking none of the courses related to statistics and between pre-service teachers taking all courses and taking only probability. Attitudes towards statistics according to the courses they took, it was concluded that there was a significant difference between pre-service teachers taking no courses related to statistics and taking all courses, and between pre-service teachers taking only probability courses and taking all courses related to statistics.
