Abstract

Agricultural cooperatives, as hybrid entities balancing economic viability and social purpose, require performance measurement frameworks that reflect their unique dual objectives. Current evaluation tools predominantly emphasize generic financial metrics or isolated sustainability indicators, thereby neglecting to capture the intricate interactions among cooperative principles, operational realities, and long-term sustainability. Nevertheless, the evaluation of their performance has advanced through contentious paradigms: transitioning from traditional economic critiques grounded in property rights theory to member-focused methodologies that emphasize welfare through countervailing power, risk mitigation, and non-monetary advantages. Dynamic and survival frameworks further reconceptualize success by prioritizing adaptability and resilience, highlighting long-term viability as opposed to short-term profit maximization.

This paper conducts a comprehensive literature review to analyze current frameworks for evaluating cooperative performance and identify metrics that enhance sustainability and resilience. The findings indicate a continued dependence on investor-centric tools, insufficient integration of environmental and social indicators, and a notable absence of customized approaches for diverse agricultural value chains. While conventional metrics inadequately reflect the dual socio-economic missions of cooperatives, emerging paradigms seek to amalgamate qualitative indicators with quantitative benchmarks. Nonetheless, challenges remain: hybrid governance complicates scale dependencies and survival-resilience trade-offs. The study advocates for context-sensitive frameworks that harmonize member welfare, environmental stewardship, and market competitiveness, urging subsequent research to focus on lifecycle adaptability and the integration of digital technologies.
