Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using Algodoo, an interactive physics simulation tool, to enhance understanding of collision concepts, specifically focusing on perfectly elastic, partially elastic, and inelastic collisions. An experimental method was employed, where students conducted virtual experiments in Algodoo to explore and analyze key physical quantities, such as momentum and kinetic energy, involved in different types of collisions. Additionally, a qualitative survey was conducted to assess the perceived benefits of Algodoo among the participants. The subjects in this study consisted of 21 fifth-semester university students. The results showed that Algodoo accurately simulates perfectly elastic collisions, with the conservation of momentum, a restitution coefficient of 1, velocity exchange, and constant kinetic energy, aligning with theoretical principles. For partially elastic collisions, the simulations demonstrated momentum conservation, a restitution coefficient of 0.5, and a reduction in kinetic energy after the collision. However, Algodoo could not simulate completely inelastic collisions due to the lack of a “collide and stick” feature. The survey results indicated that students found Algodoo helpful in understanding complex physics concepts, praising its ability to visualize challenging material, provide accurate simulations, and maintain engagement through visually appealing features.
