- Abstract
To address the growing issue of environmental pollution, shipping companies must invest in emission-reduction technologies to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime transportation. Additionally, the fluctuations in the shipping market demand require freight forwarders to enhance their marketing and sales efforts. These factors create a situation where altruistic behavior from shipping companies becomes possible. This paper develops a two-tier shipping supply chain consisting of a shipping company and a freight forwarder, with the forwarder focusing on sales efforts. It analyzes three scenarios: no altruism, altruism from the shipping company, and altruism from the freight forwarder, to examine how these altruistic preferences affect supply chain decisions and profitability. The findings indicate that: (1) Altruism from the shipping company results in higher retail prices and lower wholesale prices. In comparison, altruism from the freight forwarder leads to lower retail prices and higher wholesale prices. (2) Altruistic behavior from either party enhances both the level of investment in emission reduction and the intensity of sales efforts. (3) Altruism from the shipping company increases profits for both itself and the freight forwarder, whereas altruism from the freight forwarder benefits the shipping company but reduces its profit.
