Abstract

This study analyzes the UK’s response to the 2017 Wannacry ransomware attack and the implementation of cybersecurity strategies thereafter. The primary focus is on the application of the Deter, Defend, and Develop policies in response to the attack. Deterring involves preventive measures through public education and the implementation of more effective security systems. Defend focuses on strengthening cyber defenses, including the Development of the Active Cyber Defence program for threat detection and Prevention. Develop aims to build long-term capacity through education and training in cybersecurity. Additionally, the UK government applies the Four Ps framework—Prevent, Pursue, Protect, and Prepare—to comprehensively address cyber threats. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method, secondary data from reports, policy documents, and relevant sources to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies implemented. The findings indicate that the UK’s cybersecurity strategy following the Wannacry attack led to a significant reduction in the number of cyberattacks. The implementation of the Four Ps framework proved effective in mitigating immediate threats. In conclusion, the UK’s response to the Wannacry attack underscores the necessity of a comprehensive cybersecurity framework to reduce cyber threats effectively. The UK has significantly improved its cybersecurity posture, reducing the frequency and impact of cyberattacks. The study reaffirms the importance of a proactive and adaptive approach in cybersecurity governance, ensuring long-term resilience against evolving digital threats.
