- Abstract
This article examines perlocutionary speech acts in the Indonesian film Agak Laen within a pragmatic framework. Analyzing perlocutionary acts in popular media is crucial, as it demonstrates how language not only conveys meaning but also shapes audience perceptions and social attitudes. The study focuses on how anecdotal exchanges between characters generate communicative effects on interlocutors. Its aim is to identify the forms and functions of perlocutionary acts, particularly in humorous and satirical dialogue. Drawing on Austin’s speech act theory, the research applies observational and note-taking techniques, with qualitative analysis. The findings reveal that both verbal and non-verbal perlocutionary acts are prominent, influenced by social factors such as class dynamics and power relations. Expressive acts especially those involving sarcasm and indirect criticism—emerge as dominant features of the film’s discourse. These elements not only enhance comedic value but also function as vehicles of subtle social critique. This study contributes to pragmatic and sociolinguistic scholarship by showing how contemporary Indonesian cinema mirrors social interaction through culturally embedded language use. Ultimately, Agak Laen illustrates how humor operates as a strategic medium for negotiating meaning and articulating social stance.
