Abstract

In Indonesia’s evolving digital landscape, fertility is no longer confined to private or medical discourse but is increasingly discussed in online public spheres such as TikTok. Career-oriented women, especially in urban areas, are now vocalizing alternative reproductive choices, including delaying childbirth or remaining childfree. This study investigates how such narratives emerge and circulate within Indonesian TikTok communities. The problem addressed is the social tension between traditional pronatalist expectation and contemporary values of autonomy and self-fulfillment. The purpose of this research is to explore how fertility decisions are represented and negotiated by working women on TikTok, and how these reflect broader sociocultural changes. This study is significant in highlighting the intersection of gender, economy, and digital media in shaping reproductive identity. Using a Netnography method, 87 TikTok videos were thematically analyzed based on hashtags like #ChildfreeIndonesia and #IbuBekerja. The findings shows that fertility is increasingly framed as a rational, economic, and identity-based choice, rather than a default norm. This study contributes to digital feminism scholarship and offers a state-of-the-art analysis of online fertility discourse in Southeast Asia.
