Abstract

The fishing sector is often perceived as a male occupation because its primary stage is catching fish, which is associated with offshore activities. However, this factor is only one of many stages of work in the fishing sector. Other stages in the fishing sector include preparation, fishing, and post-fishing, or pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest. All productive activities in the fishing sector are aimed at generating income, but fishermen’s various living needs cannot always be met solely from their income as fishermen. Therefore, fishermen’s income sources are dynamic and not always derived solely from the fishing sector. Therefore, the objectives of this research are: (a) to identify gender-based actors in the fishing sector and (b) to identify and explain the division of roles of women fishers in the domestic and public sectors. The location of this study was the north coast of Central Java. Data collection used observation and in-depth interviews. Data analysis went through three stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion/verification. The study results show that work in the fishing sector is dominated by women, especially in the pre-fishing and post-fishing stages. Of the 10 pre-fishing activities, six are carried out by women; two are carried out by men; and five are carried out by women in the post-fishing stage. Of the 19 fishing activities, 11 are carried out by women, while men handle the remaining 8 tasks. Therefore, it can be concluded that there are symptoms of feminization in the fishing sector.
