Abstract

This study examines the erosion of Unggah-Ungguh (Javanese etiquette and politeness) among the younger generation and specifically analyzes the transformation of parents’ roles in carrying out preservation efforts during the period 1980-2020. This is because current globalization has significantly changed the morals, speech, and behavior of society, especially Javanese society. This poses a major threat to the younger generation of Javanese who have been carried away by western culture. The purpose of this study is to see the changes, challenges and strategies of parents in being able to pass on the values of Unggah-Ungguh amidst the current of globalization. This period was chosen because it is a crucial period, the 1980s were globalization and the influence of western culture began to influence continued through digital disruption in the 2000s, until 2020 as the peak of the social media era has become part of the lifestyle of the younger generation of Java. This study uses historical methods consisting of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This research can contribute to cultural studies, family sociology and strengthening character education. Specifically, it demonstrates how the primary role of parents has shifted due to numerous interconnected influences. Therefore, this study aims to map the role of parents, who remain the primary role in maintaining, preserving, and educating the younger generation of Javanese Unggah-Ungguh. The findings of this study are in line with the current reality, namely the decline in manners and politeness in interactions with the wider community during this period. Furthermore, the impact of urbanization and the penetration of social media have gradually shifted practices, with a significant weakening occurring between 2010 and 2020, when instant digital communication and social media have eroded existing manners.
