Abstract

This study aims to determine the existence and level of magical realism elements in Eka Kurniawan’s novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas that have never been raised by previous studies. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with primary data collection techniques in the form of novels and secondary data in the form of relevant book references, articles, and journals. The theory used is the Magical Realism by Wendy B. Faris. An irreducible element is found in the character of Jelita, who suddenly disappears from Ajo Kawir’s presence. The phenomenal world is depicted on many trucks using Marylin Monroe’s image and vulgar writing on the back. Unsettling doubt is depicted in Ajo Kawir and the reader’s confusion regarding Ajo Kawir’s genitals that return to normal function after making love with Jelita. The incorporation of nature is evident when Wa Sami advises Ajo Kawir on the narrative of punishment in hell for evil people. The disruption of time, space, and identity focuses on the figure of Jelita who is considered the same figure as the crazy old woman named Rona Merah who was killed when Ajo Kawir was a child. This novel is classified as a magical realism novel by considering the fulfillment of the five elements, but the magical content itself is still slightly found.
